SONICATION EFFECTS
An analysis of the effect of the duration of sonication on the particle size distribution was investigated using the original unpressed HMX. The figure below illustrates the effects of sonication on the original material. A sample of HMX was tested without sonication, and subsequently after 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, and 30 minutes of sonication. The samples that were sonicated for only one and five minutes showed distributions only moderately changed from the original distribution. Significant effects were evident, however, in the 15 minute bath as the mean particle size shifted from 270 µm to 92 µm. Extended periods of sonication resulted in the formation of smaller particles.
